Skimboard, From Its Inception To Its Demise, And Back Again, An Overview.
A skimboard and the right beach are one of the best combinations for a great day at the beach. This is a great sport for water sport lovers that enjoy speed, waves and have the ability to carry out this fun sport. From its inception till now skimboarding has come a long way, and like waves, has grown, crashed, and come back again.
For those that have never seen one it is a very flat board with rounded edges on both sides, like a very long egg. The idea is that the board needs to be as light and buoyant as possible. This article will look at the history of skimboarding since it began till today. In doing so it will ask three main questions: Where did it start? What Happened in the 80s? And, where are we today?
In this short article we will look at three questions people ask themselves about this sport. The questions we will be looking at are: where does it originate from? What happened to the sport in the 1980s? And, where is it heading nowadays?
This story all began in Orange County, California, in a city called Laguna Beach. Life guards first used them. They would walk around with pieces of wood they would use to to slide along the water front. From that early beginning in the 1920s it slowly became the popular sport it now is.
What Happened in the 80s? The early 80s saw a boom in the popularity of this budding sport, even appearing in the cover of Sports Illustrated. However the late 80s and early 90s saw a demise in this sport.
What is the situation of skimboarding today? A skimboard is more likely to be seen now on a beach than ever before. This is a sport that promises to continue to grow and grow as long as people like water sports. That is, for ever.
