Lemon Essential Oil – The Power and the Pleasure
When it comes to essential oils, lemon is right up there with lavender, although it’s quite a different oil. Lemon essential oil has so many uses, is so refresing and is so versatile that it has become one of my all-time favorites. I love to use is as a flavoring, a tonic, to freshen rooms and sheets, to improve water, as a cleanser, to polish furniture and more.
But I’m NOT talking about the inexpensive drug store or most health food store varieties. I’m talking about therapeutic-grade, high-quality lemon essential oil. There is a huge difference between the two, even if its hardly detectable with the nose. The inexpensive variety has none of the therapeutic benefits. It is essentially a bottle of chemical solvents and additives artificially scented with lemon. Do yourself a favor and stay away from it.
The Powerful Benefits of Therapeutic-Grade Lemon Essential Oil
Therapeutic-grade lemon essential oil is anti-infectious, antibacterial (especially with spores), antiseptic, antiviral. It can function as a disinfectant and has vitamin P-like action for improving microcirculation, promoting white blood cell formation and improving immune fuction.*
It has also been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin and reduce wrinkles. It helps brighten pale, dull complexions and remove dead skin cells. (But remember that lemon oil is photosensitizing, so avoid applying it to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or UV light.) Simply smelling lemon oil helps clear the mind, improve memory, and boost energy level.
Just Look At What Lemon Essential Oil Does To Meningococcus, Staphylococcus And Typhoid
French medical doctor and aromatherapist, Dr. Jean Valnet, states that the vaporized essence of lemon (when diffused in a diffuser) can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, Staphylococcus aureus in two hours, and Pneumococus bacteria within three hours. Even a 0.2 percent solution of lemon oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes and inactivate tuberculosis bacteria in the air.* That’s pretty astonishing!
Lemon oil has been used for anemia, asthma, herpes, warts, shingles, bleeding, malaria, parasites, rheumatism, throat infections, sore throats, ureter infections, and varicose veins.*
In addition, the antioxidant levels of lemon essential oil are very high. Lemon oil has an approximate ORAC score of 6,619 (TE/L). TE/L is expressed as micromole Trolox equivalent per liter. (But again, you won’t get these levels in the inexpensive drug store variety, only in the therapeutic-grade).
If you like to drink your water with a lemon wedge, you may want to reconsider. A recent study of lemon wedges showed that 70 percent of lemon wedges tested (from 21 different restaurants) were contaminated with bacteria, including high counts of fecal bacteria.
What to do? Easy – use a couple of drops of 100% pure lemon essential oil to flavor and purify your water instead. A bottle of lemon essential oil is small and light and easily fits into a purse or pocket.

What surprises me is that I’ve never been a big fan of lemons or lemonade. But I’ve fallen for lemon oil because quality lemon essential oil is in a class by itself. It smells exactly like the clean, fresh scent of a freshly cut lemon. It bursts through and enlivens my senses. It seems to make everything seem “more alive.” Once you try it, you’ll never know how you lived without it!
