Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of misconceptions created by layman\’s imagination. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don\’t consider them to be serious scientific pursuits. Following are some of the well known misconceptions about hypnosis and the reality behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. The authenticity of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the influence of their words. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but remains completely conscious of the happenings around him. Hypnosis actually induces a state of complete relaxation characterized by a growth in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified sensitivity helps the subject to receive new inputs without difficulty.

Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different individuals fall under different personality types, and therefore respond to different techniques.

Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal feeling that has got no involvement of communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. The person doesn\’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, on the other hand hypnosis is impossible without communication.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is clearly not magic that it can change the physical appearance of an individual on its own. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
