Brighton – East Sussex Is A Major Beach Vacation Destination

One of England’s major tourist destinations, Brighton is a huge attraction as a result of its magnificent beaches. The history of beach combers has existed since the late 1700′s. During the 1780′s a health resort was created here. This had a major effect on this area. A second boom occurred as the railroad made it possible to get to this area from further away.

In modern times this beach town attracts almost more visitors than any other beach town in England and Europe. The area is also popular for conventions and business meetings. There are also two universities in the city limits.

The Domesday Book makes mention of a city in this area during its survey in the 1500. ‘s. The Domesday Book was a survey to determine what areas existed and what there borders were. This was done for the purpose of taxation and the town of Bristlemestune was taxed 4000 herring.

This beach front town was destroyed at the hands of the French in 1514. There are very few structures that survived the invasion. One such building that managed to survive the fires was the St. Nicholas Church. This building was partly burnt and the remains can be seen by tourist today.

In the 1700. ‘s this area witnessed a large influx of vacationers. This was as a result of a doctor who recommended to his patients that get seawater for their ailments. This created a health resort and was one of the first of its kind. From this influx of visitors major construction occurred including the fishing village.

One of the people that received this doctor. ‘s advice was the Prince Regent. This prince would later become King George IV. King George was so impressed with the area as a result of his initial visit that he came back and bought a farm and built a royal palace. This palace was the Royal Pavilion. This structure is a truly unique structure and resembles an Indian palace. This pavilion is still recognized today as one of the most unique homes ever built. King George had this home built to provide a place for him to meet with his female acquaintance who happened to be a married woman.

Brighton continues to be one of the most visited cities in England as a result of its beaches and the Royal Palace. The beaches provide as great of an impression in modern times as it did when King George first visited here at the recommendation of his doctor. The beaches and the Royal palace are well worth the visit to this water front town.
